Mastering Your Mindset for Injury Comebacks

By Tony Silvio, Sports Mindset Coach Perth | Midas Mindset

Ever felt like your body’s healing faster than your mind?

That’s the kicker for so many athletes I work with. Physios clear them, doctors give the green light, but mentally—they’re still stuck in the rehab room. You’re not weak. You’re not broken. You’re just human. And if you want to return not just physically fit but mentally bulletproof, it’s time to train the muscle between your ears.

Welcome to the real game—mastering your mindset for injury comebacks.

Why Most Athletes Struggle After Injury (And Why It’s Not Your Fault)

Here’s the truth no one talks about: injury doesn’t just break bones or tear ligaments—it shakes your identity. You go from athlete to patient overnight. You miss the locker room banter, the adrenaline, the rhythm. That sudden loss of momentum can send you spiralling into self-doubt.

What you need is a comeback mindset—one that’s grounded in mental resilience, clarity, and comeback confidence.

Because physical rehab might end, but mental rehab is just getting started.

Step 1: Rewrite the Injury Story

You can either tell yourself:

“I’m behind everyone else. I’ve lost my edge.”Or you can say:“This setback is part of my growth. I’m not starting from scratch—I’m starting from experience.”

The stories you tell yourself shape your identity. At Midas Mindset, I teach athletes to shift from a fear-based narrative to one fuelled by purpose and perspective. This isn't fluffy self-talk. This is how champions reframe their recovery.

Step 2: Focus on Micro-Wins, Not Mega-Goals

Injured athletes often want to skip the steps and jump straight back into peak performance. But mental resilience is built in the trenches.

  • You got out of bed without limping? Win.

  • You finished that dreaded pool session? Win.

  • You trusted your body during that light jog? Win.

By celebrating these micro-wins, you create a momentum loop—where progress becomes more important than perfection. And in comeback journeys, momentum is everything.

Step 3: Train Your Brain Like You Train Your Body

Your mind needs just as much conditioning as your quad or hamstring. If you’re doing strength and mobility work, you should be doing mental skill training too.

Here’s what I get athletes to focus on in my Midas Recovery Coaching:

  • Visualisation with purpose – not just daydreaming about playing again, but mentally rehearsing sharp, controlled movements in game-like situations.

  • Self-talk audits – catching that inner critic early before it sabotages your return.

  • Emotional regulation tools – learning how to breathe through frustration and stay grounded.

If your brain isn't match-fit, it doesn't matter how good your body feels. You'll hesitate, overthink, and underperform.

Step 4: Redefine “High Performance” During Recovery

Here’s a mindset flip: your current version of high performance is mastering recovery. It’s not about breaking records or being the fittest on the field. It’s about doing the work that no one sees—the ice baths, the journaling, the setbacks that build steel.

You’re not falling behind. You’re building mental resilience that will serve you long after your injury is a footnote.

Step 5: Don’t Do It Alone

Comebacks can feel lonely. Especially when everyone around you has moved on and you're still stuck doing clamshells and single-leg balances.

That’s why community and support matter. Whether it’s your coach, your physio, or someone like me in your corner—having someone to check your mindset and hold you accountable makes all the difference.

You weren’t meant to navigate the athlete recovery journey solo.

Your Mindset Is Your Comeback

If you’ve read my previous blogs, you’ll know I don’t do hype. I do what works. And if you're nodding along right now, thinking, "This is exactly what I’ve been struggling with", then it's time to stop winging your recovery and start training your mindset with intention.

You’ve done the physio. You’ve iced the ankle. Now it’s time to rewire your mind for the return.
